Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu | A YA Book Review

Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu I really liked this. Now full disclosure, I didn't really enjoy Warbringer because it didn't feel true to Leigh Bardugo's style and the pacing felt off. I also have never read Marie Lu before (but for sure I will be now). This is a short book (a plus to me) and it's pretty action packed. Some of the themes were headline cliches and the one major plot twist was predictable if one followed the clues, but I loved the internal conflict Bruce dealt with as well as the depth of the character, Madeleine. This was a solid 4 stars for me (I even got a little teary-eyed at some parts). Also, keep in mind I have no DC background (besides a dabble in 80s cartoons prior to

Wonder Woman: Warbringer | A YA Book Review

Wonder Woman: Warbringer (DC Icons 1) by Leigh Bardugo I'm not sure what to say about this so I'll keep it relatively short. I have my suspicions that DC and WB may have put restrictions on the authors of these Icons books to appeal to a wider audience. The Not So Good: The book was kind of boring in the beginning and was off to a slow start. I was not a fan of a major plot twist in the last quarter of the book. It also just I love Leigh Bardugo and all of Grishaverse and this somehow felt stilted. The Good: Alia, Nim, and Theo were awesome and Nim allowed for some of Bardugo's trademark sass. There were gods, goddesses, and mythology. The second half was better than the first.

Renegades by Marissa Meyer | A YA Book Review

Renegades by Marissa Meyer So...I have conflicted feelings about this book. Really my rating falls more in the 3.5/3.75 range. First, things I like: Smokescreen, Max, Adrian's super power, Honey and Cyanide. I'm also appreciative of the fact that the lines between good and evil can be blurred. It also read as if it were written for a movie which can be both good and bad. Second, things I wasn't a fan of: This is a beast of a book and the pacing seemed a bit off. Like a friend said, it just seems like a very long introduction (at 552 pages). Furthermore, virtually no plot arcs were closed in this book. Usually, there's one or two overarching plots that continue into a next book, but this

The Afterlife of Holly Chase | A YA Book Review

The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It was difficult for me to get through because it was more contemporary than I thought it would be, and the protagonist was just not likable for more than half of the book. I decided to plow through and read the last 172 pages in one sitting so I could move on to something else, and interestingly I found the last 70 or so pages the best. I cried and also really appreciated the ending even though it was not a typical YA ending. The last portion of the book made me up my rating to 3.5 (GR really needs half stars). Overall, I can't exactly pinpoint what didn't resonate with me. Maybe it was a combo of a bratty

Accio Box | December 2017

What is an Accio Box? It's a 100% handmade, artisan sub box inspired by the wizarding world. Each box contains 3-5 goodies and you select your house so you get house specific items (like the wooden ornament in this video). This is not a book sub box, but more a bookish merch sub box for HP lovers. I am not in any way affiliated, just wanted to check it out!
